Anthropic Just Gave Claude a Mouse and Keyboard. Here’s What That Means for Your Business.
Tuesday, March 24, 2026 — Two announcements from Anthropic today that every SMB owner should read before end of week.
What Happened Today
Anthropic made two moves in quick succession that, combined, fundamentally change what AI agents can do for a business:
- Claude Computer Use (GA): You can now text Claude a task from your phone and it will complete it on your desktop — opening apps, navigating browsers, filling spreadsheets, exporting files, sending calendar invites. Anthropic demonstrated it live: a user running late for a meeting asks Claude to export a pitch deck as a PDF and attach it to the invite. Claude does it without further prompting.
- Claude Code Channels: Developers can now connect Claude Code — Anthropic’s powerful agentic coding harness — directly to Discord or Telegram. Message it from your phone. It works, codes, and reports back. Asynchronously. While you do something else.
These aren’t incremental updates. They’re closing the gap between “AI assistant” and “AI employee.”
The Context: Why This Week Is Different
For the past four months, OpenClaw has dominated the AI agent conversation — the open-source project that let you message an AI via WhatsApp or Telegram and have it execute real tasks on your behalf. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang called it “the next ChatGPT” just last week. Nvidia announced its own enterprise fork, NemoClaw, days ago.
Now Anthropic is shipping native equivalents directly into Claude. The market just went from “interesting early experiments” to “platform war.”
For SMBs, this is the moment you want to pay attention. When big players compete on capabilities that were previously only available as technical side projects, prices drop and reliability goes up. That’s the window.
What Claude Opus 4.6 Actually Unlocks
Released in February and now fully GA with unified pricing, Claude Opus 4.6 is the model powering all of this. What matters to you:
- 1 million token context window. That’s your entire operations manual, six months of email history, or a full client file — all in memory at once. An agent that knows everything about your business, not just the last message.
- Adaptive Thinking + Compaction API. Long-running agents no longer “forget” what they were doing halfway through a multi-hour task. This is what makes overnight automation actually reliable.
- Agent Teams (native). One Claude can now coordinate with other Claudes. Assign a task and the model figures out how to break it into parallel sub-tasks. You don’t need to orchestrate it yourself.
- 128k default output tokens. Long documents, detailed reports, complex code — without arbitrary truncation.
Three Use Cases SMBs Should Test This Month
1. Inbox-to-Action on Autopilot
With computer use + your email client, an AI agent can: read inbound leads, look up CRM history, draft a personalized follow-up, attach the relevant case study, and schedule a send — without touching the keyboard. A real estate agency using AI-powered lead qualification saw 45% more qualified appointments with 30% less time spent on unqualified inquiries. That’s the category of ROI you should expect in year one.
2. Async Coding Work Overnight
If you have a developer or are building anything technical: Claude Code Channels means you can message a task before you go to bed and find it done in the morning. Update the pricing page, fix the form bug, pull this month’s analytics into a report. The agent doesn’t need you in the loop until it’s finished.
3. Spreadsheet + Reporting Workflows
This is the biggest unlock for non-technical SMBs. Computer use can navigate Excel, Google Sheets, and any web app without an API. If your data lives somewhere that doesn’t have an integration, that’s no longer a blocker. The agent can just … use the software the same way a human would.
The Honest Caveat
Anthropic was upfront about this: “Computer use is still early compared to Claude’s ability to code or interact with text.” It will make mistakes. Anthropic has safeguards in place — Claude asks permission before accessing new apps — but you shouldn’t give it unsupervised access to anything irreversible on day one.
The right posture: start with tasks where a mistake is low-stakes and easy to catch. Review the output. Build trust incrementally. This is a new employee in their first month, not a tenured operator.
What This Means for the AI Agent Market in 2026
Gartner now projects over 50% of SMBs will adopt AI automation by end of year — more than double the 2023 rate. 40% of enterprise applications are expected to include task-specific AI agents by year end (up from 5% in 2025). These aren’t speculative numbers; they’re lagging indicators of a shift that’s already underway.
The businesses that win in this environment aren’t the ones that wait for the technology to mature. They’re the ones that get their first agent running in the next 30 days, learn what breaks, fix it, and are six months ahead by the time everyone else decides to start.
Bottom Line
Anthropic shipped computer use and messaging-native agent access on the same day. Claude Opus 4.6 already has the best context window and multi-agent coordination on the market. The platform war for AI agents is live, and the SMB window — where early movers get outsized advantage before this becomes table stakes — is open right now.
If you’re a service business running on email, spreadsheets, and a CRM, you have more to gain from this than anyone. The cost of not moving is compounding daily.
